Twenty kilobytes is signature territory — the size SSC, IBPS and most exam portals demand for the signature upload. The tool below opens with 20KB pre-set; add your signature or small photo and download a form-ready file.
The Signature Size: Why Forms Ask for 20KB
Photos get the generous limits; signatures get 20KB. SSC, IBPS and most banking and recruitment portals cap the signature upload at 10–20KB, because a signature is simple — dark ink on white paper — and genuinely needs very little data to stay perfectly legible. The catch is that modern phones and scanners produce the opposite of simple: a single phone photo of your signature can be 3–4 MB, full of paper texture, shadows and colour noise. This page closes that gap. The compressor is pre-set to 20KB and reduces quality in fine steps until the file fits, and because a signature has so little detail to lose, the result stays crisp — usually identical to the eye.
Where a 20KB File Is Exactly What the Form Wants
| Application | Requirement Involving 20KB |
|---|---|
| SSC CGL / CHSL / GD / MTS | Signature 10–20 KB; photo minimum 20 KB |
| IBPS PO / Clerk | Signature 10–20 KB, JPG |
| Indian Army Recruitment | Photo itself is only 10–20 KB |
| NEET / JEE (NTA) | Signature 4–30 KB — 20 KB sits safely inside |
| UPSC Civil Services | Signature band starts low; ~20 KB is comfortably valid |
Preparing a full SSC application? The SSC Photo & Signature Resizer walks through both uploads with the exact SSC dimensions, and our step-by-step guide to compressing images for UPSC, SSC and government forms explains the rules behind every limit. UPSC candidates can use the companion UPSC Photo Resizer the same way.
Five Tricks That Make Tiny Targets Easy
- Crop ruthlessly. For a signature, trim every millimetre of blank paper around the ink. Empty margins still cost bytes; the ink is all the portal wants.
- Sign boldly, on bright white paper. A thick dark stroke on clean paper survives hard compression. Pencil-thin or faded signatures turn to grey mush at 20KB.
- Think grayscale. Colour information is half the file. A signature has no colour worth keeping — if your scanner offers a grayscale mode, use it and watch the size fall before compression even starts.
- Shrink dimensions first for photos. If a photo refuses to reach 20KB cleanly, reduce its pixel size with the Image Resizer and then compress — small dimensions plus mild compression beat extreme compression alone.
- Target the middle of the band. For a 10–20KB requirement, set 16–18KB here instead of exactly 20KB, so a portal that measures size differently still accepts the file.
Signatures vs Photos at 20KB — Different Jobs, Different Results
At this size the two image types behave very differently, and it is worth knowing which one you are holding. A signature is line art: sharp edges, two colours, huge empty areas. JPEG compression adores it, and a 20KB signature normally looks perfect. A photograph is continuous tone — skin, hair, cloth, background — and 20KB forces real sacrifices; faces stay recognisable if the shot is tight and bright, but fine detail goes. That is why portals that ask for a 20KB photo (like Army recruitment) expect a small, tightly framed image. If your form allows a larger photo limit, take it — our 50KB compressor will give you a visibly better portrait for the same effort.
How to Compress an Image to 20KB
-
Step 1: Upload Your Signature or Photo
Tap the upload box and choose the image. For signatures, a tight crop around the ink works best.
-
Step 2: Check the Target — 20KB Is Pre-Set
This page opens at 20KB. If your form's band is 10–20KB, lower the target slightly to 17KB for a safety margin.
-
Step 3: Click Compress to KB
The tool steps the quality down until the file reaches the target, and shows you the before and after sizes.
-
Step 4: Download and Confirm the Range
Download the file and check that its size falls inside the exact range in your notification — both above the minimum and below the maximum.
