Why Do Companies and Universities Ask for Percentage Instead of CGPA?

CGPA is an internal grading system used by universities to evaluate students on a relative scale. Similarly, foreign universities in the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia evaluate Indian applications using percentage or GPA on a 4.0 scale. Indian universities' CGPA on a 10-point scale must be converted before applications to these institutions are complete.

How to Convert CGPA to GPA (4.0 Scale) for Foreign Universities

If you are applying to universities in the USA or Canada that require a GPA on a 4.0 scale, here is the general approach:

• Step 1: Convert your CGPA (10-point scale) to percentage using your university's formula.
• Step 2: Use the WES (World Education Services) or foreign university's grading chart to convert percentage to 4.0 GPA.
• General mapping: 90–100% → 4.0 GPA | 80–89% → 3.5–3.9 | 70–79% → 3.0–3.4 | 60–69% → 2.5–2.9 | Below 60% → Below 2.5

CGPA Conversion for Government Job Applications

Many government jobs and PSU (Public Sector Undertaking) recruitment require you to meet academic eligibility criteria expressed in percentage. Here is how CGPA maps to government job requirements:

• Second Class: 50–59% (CGPA approximately 5.0–5.9)
