About the Percentage Calculator
A percentage is simply a number expressed as a fraction of 100 โ "per cent" literally means "per hundred". Percentages show up everywhere in Indian daily life: board-exam results, shop discounts, salary hikes, GST and interest rates, election vote shares and cricket strike rates. This page packs the three calculations people need most into one tool, with instant results โ no sign-up, and everything is calculated in your browser.
The 3 Percentage Formulas โ With Worked Examples
1. Finding a percent of a number: Result = (X รท 100) ร Y. Example: what is 15% of 400? (15 รท 100) ร 400 = 60. Use this for discounts, tips, commission and exam cut-offs.
2. Finding what percent one number is of another: Percentage = (Part รท Total) ร 100. Example: you scored 342 out of 500 in your exams. 342 รท 500 ร 100 = 68.4%. This is exactly how marks percentage is calculated for Class 10, Class 12 and university results โ just enter marks obtained and maximum marks in Mode 2.
3. Percentage increase or decrease: Change % = ((New โ Old) รท Old) ร 100. Example: a salary rising from โน40,000 to โน46,000 is (6,000 รท 40,000) ร 100 = a 15% hike. A price rising from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase; if the new value is smaller, the same formula gives a decrease.
Percentage vs Percentage Points โ Don't Get Fooled
These two sound alike but mean very different things. If a bank raises its fixed-deposit rate from 8% to 10%, the rate has gone up by 2 percentage points (10 โ 8). But relative to the old rate, that is a 25% increase ((10 โ 8) รท 8 ร 100). Advertisements and news headlines often pick whichever number sounds bigger. When money is involved โ loan rates, mutual fund returns, discount offers โ always ask: points or percent?
Quick Reference: Percentages as Fractions
Many percentages are simple fractions in disguise. Remembering these makes mental maths much faster:
| Percentage | Fraction | Decimal |
| 1% | 1/100 | 0.01 |
| 5% | 1/20 | 0.05 |
| 10% | 1/10 | 0.10 |
| 12.5% | 1/8 | 0.125 |
| 20% | 1/5 | 0.20 |
| 25% | 1/4 | 0.25 |
| 33.33% | 1/3 | 0.333 |
| 50% | 1/2 | 0.50 |
| 66.67% | 2/3 | 0.667 |
| 75% | 3/4 | 0.75 |
So 12.5% of โน800 is just 800 รท 8 = โน100 โ no calculator needed. For percentages in school marks, pair this tool with our CGPA to Percentage Calculator if your result is in CGPA, or the GST Calculator when the percentage is a tax rate.
