🎂 Age Calculator for Govt Exams

Enter your date of birth and the cutoff date from your exam notification to get your exact age in years, months and days — the way SSC, UPSC, IBPS and RRB count it.

Why Govt Exams Count Your Age on a Cutoff Date

Every SSC, UPSC, IBPS and Railway notification fixes one date — the cutoff date (also called the crucial date) — and your age is counted only up to that date. It is never the exam day, and usually not even the last date to apply. Lakhs of applications are rejected every year because candidates counted their age on the wrong date. This calculator removes that doubt: enter your date of birth and the exact "age as on" date from your notification, and compare the result with the limits below. Then finish the application with our exam-wise SSC, UPSC and IBPS photo & signature resizers.

How to Count Your Age — Worked Example

Count completed years first, then completed months, then the leftover days. Take a candidate born on 15 August 2000, with a cutoff date of 1 August 2026 (the date UPSC uses). Completed years: 25 (the 26th birthday falls on 15 August 2026 — after the cutoff). Completed months after that: 11 (up to 15 July 2026). Remaining days: 17 (15 July to 1 August). So the official age is 25 years, 11 months, 17 days — 9,482 days in total — and not "26" as a rough year-subtraction (2026 − 2000) suggests. The same trap works in reverse: a candidate born on 2 January 1999 is 26 years, 11 months, 30 days on 1 January 2026 — still within a limit of 27, even though the birth year looks a full 27 years old.

Age Limits for Major Govt Exams (Indicative)

Limits change slightly between notifications and vary by post within the same exam. The table below reflects the latest major notifications — always confirm against the DOB window printed in your own notification before applying.

SSC CGL18–32 years (varies by post; many posts are 18–27 or 20–30)
SSC GD Constable18–23 years
UPSC Civil Services21–32 years, counted as on 1 August of the exam year
IBPS PO20–30 years
IBPS Clerk20–28 years
RRB NTPC18–30 years (undergraduate posts); 18–33 years (graduate posts) in recent CENs

Category-Wise Age Relaxation

Reserved-category candidates get extra years above the general upper limit. Relaxation applies only to the maximum age — the minimum age must be attained by everyone. Standard central government pattern:

OBC+3 years
SC / ST+5 years
PwBD (General)+10 years
PwBD + OBC+13 years
PwBD + SC/ST+15 years

So a general-category UPSC aspirant must be under 32 on the cutoff date, while an OBC aspirant effectively gets up to 35, and SC/ST up to 37. Calculate your exact age above first, then add your category's relaxation to the exam's upper limit — not to your age.

Common Age-Calculation Mistakes That Get Forms Rejected

  • Counting from the exam date: the exam may be held 4–6 months after the cutoff date; those months do not count.
  • Subtracting only the years: 2026 − 2000 = 26 ignores whether your birthday has occurred by the cutoff — the months and days decide borderline cases.
  • Checking only the upper limit: minimum age is equally strict. Turning 21 a week after the UPSC cutoff makes you ineligible this year.
  • Using the Aadhaar / voter ID date of birth: only the Class 10 (matriculation) certificate DOB is accepted at document verification.
  • Applying relaxation to your age instead of the limit: relaxation raises the ceiling; your actual age stays the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cutoff date in government exams?
The cutoff date (also called the crucial date or 'age as on' date) is the fixed date printed in the exam notification on which your age is counted. It is not the exam date or the last date to apply. For example, UPSC counts age as on 1st August of the exam year, while SSC and IBPS notifications each specify their own date or date window.
How do I calculate my exact age for SSC or UPSC?
Subtract your date of birth from the cutoff date in the notification, counting completed years, then completed months, then remaining days. For example, if you were born on 15/08/2000 and the cutoff is 01/08/2026, your age is 25 years, 11 months, 17 days — not 26, because your birthday in 2026 has not yet occurred on the cutoff date. This calculator does that counting exactly.
My birthday falls just after the cutoff date. Am I eligible?
It can work in your favour. Age is frozen on the cutoff date, so if the upper limit is 30 and your 30th birthday is the day after the cutoff, you are still 29 years and 364 days on the cutoff date and remain eligible. The reverse also applies at the lower limit: if you turn 21 a day after the cutoff, you have not attained 21 and are not eligible for a 21–32 exam.
Which date of birth counts — the one on my Aadhaar or my 10th certificate?
SSC, UPSC, IBPS and RRB all treat the date of birth recorded in your Matriculation / Secondary (Class 10) certificate as the only valid proof. If the DOB in your application differs from the 10th certificate, the application can be rejected at document verification even if you clear the exam. Always enter the certificate date.
Does age relaxation apply to the minimum age also?
No. Category relaxation (OBC 3 years, SC/ST 5 years, PwBD 10 years) applies only to the upper (maximum) age limit. Every candidate, whatever the category, must have attained the minimum age — for example 21 years for UPSC Civil Services — on the cutoff date.
Can I combine relaxations, like PwBD with OBC?
Yes, relaxations are cumulative in most central government exams. A PwBD candidate from the OBC category typically gets 10 + 3 = 13 years above the general upper limit, and a PwBD SC/ST candidate gets 10 + 5 = 15 years. The exact combination rules are printed in each notification, so confirm there before applying.
I crossed the age limit by a few days. Can I still apply?
No. Age eligibility is mechanical — even one day beyond the limit on the cutoff date makes you ineligible, and there is no appeal or grace period. Instead, check the DOB window printed in the notification (it always gives exact 'born not earlier than / not later than' dates) and look at exams with a higher upper limit or your category relaxation.
Which date should I enter as the 'age as on' date in this calculator?
Enter the exact date given in your exam notification's age-limit paragraph — phrases like 'Age as on 01/08/2026' or 'candidates must have been born not earlier than 02/01/1996 and not later than 01/01/2008'. Do not enter the exam date, the application last date, or today's date; those give a wrong result.
